During this time of year, it’s easy to get ahead on calories and behind on burning them. Today’s Weight loss Wednesday tip is all about sweets. Sweets are the downfall of many diets but did you know that artificial sweeteners can also take down your diet? I’s true. When the tongue tastes something sweet, our stomach prepares to digest that sweet and if it doesn’t get the sugar a craving sets in which can lead to binging. The fake sweet tastes sweet but doesn’t deliver so a craving for sugar can set in and stay until it is satisfied. You are better off just having a little real sweet that contains sugar or skipping it all together.
The problems with real sugar are many. Sugar spikes blood sugar levels, and when those levels plummet we crave sugar like crazy, sometimes causing a bad chain reaction aka binging. Sugar also strokes the pleasure center in the brain. It actually makes us happy to eat sugar. When you stop eating the sugar that happiness wains instantly and the brain wants, guess what?…MORE SUGAR! Don’t fall into the trap! The less you eat sugar and simple carbs, the less you will crave them. The weight loss is inspiring and you might even get on a serious power trip against these diet killers.
If you must sweeten your tea, coffee, yogurt, etc., try Agave nectar. It is a natural sweetener that does not cause blood sugar elevation like sugar and even honey can cause. Most importantly, if you blow it and eat a little sweets during this sweet abundant season, don’t beat yourself up! Don’t think, “I’ve blown it, I might as well really indulge.” Just let it go, move on and try to do better in the future.
